Laleh

Laleh - Sjung

I have a new favourite Swedish pop star: her name is Laleh. With quite an interest in Swedish pop music, I don't know how or why she's slipped under my radar. But it wasn't until about a week ago, when I checked out the Swedish Charts that I discovered her. Just a week or so after the release of her latest album, Sjung (Sing), it's topped the Swedish album charts, and she currently has two songs in the Swedish single charts, including a remake of Eva Dahlgren's "Ängeln i rummet", a song she performed in front of Eva on "Så mycket bättre". "Så mycket bättre" (so much better) is a … [Read more...]

Temperamental Sydney

The Temperamentals at Sydney's New Theatre

I left the house reasonably early today, and didn't get home until about ten-thirty tonight. When I left the house, it was fine and sunny and I was wearing shorts, thongs and a polo-shirt; and when I arrived home, I was still wearing shorts, thongs and a polo-shirt, but Sydney was in the midst of a torrential rain storm. We don't cope well with rain storms in Sydney, do we? And this was a particularly heavy, tropical-style rain storm, with thunder and lightning. There was one moment, tonight, standing at Taylor Square when there was a massive bolt of lightning (seemingly not too far away) … [Read more...]

New Supplier

Daim now selling from the Convenience Store on Crown Street

I've been going cold turkey for the last few months. It hasn't been easy. In fact, it's been hard. But tonight, on Crown Street Surry Hills, I got a hit, and it was awesome. I'm talking about the Swedish confectionary, Daim, which, until a few months ago was available from IKEA. In their wisdom, IKEA has stopped selling authentic Swedish food, replacing it with their own "home brand" merchandise. So imagine my surprise tonight, when I went to my local convenience store to purchase some milk, and I saw Daim on sale on the front counter. "This is Swedish", I said in a breathy excitement to … [Read more...]

Bird mural on Edgley/Nickson Street, Surry Hills

For the last few days I've been meaning to pop across the road and take a photograph of the restored mural in the nearby park. Back in October last year, when there was first talk of a renovation, it was looking a bit shabby, to say the least. That was when the first development application or council notification or whatever came around. Five months later, it's looking pretty good. As I've been sick the last few weeks I've been able to watch some of those involved go about their jobs. It's been fascinating to watch the combination of experts and tradesmen coming together to work on … [Read more...]

Hat’s Off 2012

Flyer for Hat's Off 2012

We had a brilliant night at Hat's Off, the annual "Smörgåsbord" of Australan musical theatre at the Seymour Centre. Amongst the highlights for us both were: * Two English Gents - two blokes in bowler hats and suits (who later stripped off to Union Jack boxer shorts, and to reveal quite remarkable bodies) who performed some amazing acrobatic acts. See video below. * Jack Chambers - the young boy from Australian Idol (or whatever) who performed a tribute to Whitney Houston. * Separately this time, Lucy Durack and Matthew Robinson, who we've both seen several times before. Lucy … [Read more...]

Melodifestivalen 2012 #2

Countdown to Melodifestivalen

After an early night in bed - still recovering a bit from my cyst - I was up nice and early this morning to watch Episode 2 of this year's "Melodifestivalen", the contest which select's Sweden's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Yes, this is my life my friends... I was reasonably excited by the line-up this week, moreso than last week, as there were a couple of firm Swedish pop favourites performing, including Andreas Lunstedt (from Alcazar), Timoteij (from Melodifestivalen a couple of years ago) and Ulrik Munther (who I saw perform a version of Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" at last … [Read more...]
