Melodifestivalen 2012 #3

Björn Ranelid feat. Sara Li

If you have any familiarity with Melodifestivalen - the Swedish finals leading to the Eurovision Song Contest - you're probably aware of Eric Saade who represented Sweden last year. His song, "Popular" was a good song, performed well, though it was criticsed by some for being too derivative of of Boney M's "Rasputin" and a 1980s Swedish hit by Lili och Suzi. The previous year, Eric had also entered Melodifestivalen with the song, "Manboy", a song which incidentally had nothing to do with that … [Read more...]

Laleh

Laleh - Sjung

I have a new favourite Swedish pop star: her name is Laleh. With quite an interest in Swedish pop music, I don't know how or why she's slipped under my radar. But it wasn't until about a week ago, when I checked out the Swedish Charts that I discovered her. Just a week or so after the release of her latest album, Sjung (Sing), it's topped the Swedish album charts, and she currently has two songs in the Swedish single charts, including a remake of Eva Dahlgren's "Ängeln i rummet", a song she … [Read more...]

Melodifestivalen 2012 #2

Countdown to Melodifestivalen

After an early night in bed - still recovering a bit from my cyst - I was up nice and early this morning to watch Episode 2 of this year's "Melodifestivalen", the contest which select's Sweden's entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. Yes, this is my life my friends... I was reasonably excited by the line-up this week, moreso than last week, as there were a couple of firm Swedish pop favourites performing, including Andreas Lunstedt (from Alcazar), Timoteij (from Melodifestivalen a couple of … [Read more...]

MaggioFest

Veronica Maggio, Snook, Petter - Inga problem

I don't know why exactly, but for the last few days I've found myself a little addicted to the music of Veronica Maggio. Almost exclusively, I've been listening to her albums, "Och vinnaren är..." and "Satan i gatan". She's a Swedish pop/soul singer I first discovered in 2008 thanks to her song, "Måndagsbarn" ("Monday's Child"). I loved the innocence of the video clip. I loved the clarity of her vocal. And I loved the fact that she sang in Swedish. Even for domestic consumption, a lot … [Read more...]

Ola är jättebra!

ola

Today I would like to introduce you to my favourite Swedish pop star at the moment, Ola Svensson. I first discovered his work when he was an entrant in Melodifestivalen, the Swedish finals leading to the Eurovision Song Contest back in 2008. I thought the song, Love in Stereo was "okay". A few months later I saw him perform live at Stockholm Pride and, again, I thought he was "okay". He went from being "okay" to pretty fantastic when, two years later, he entered Melodifestivalen with the … [Read more...]

We dared to break all contact with our mother. Photo by Julia Nygren.

I almost cried when I saw this photograph. "What on earth have they been through to make such a declaration", I asked myself. "We dared to break all contact with our mother" is such an incredibly sad statement. You just know that whatever's happened must have been difficult for both the daughters and the mother. It's one of a series of images - about daring to do things - in a music video by the Swedish group, Säkert, a group I discovered about twelve months ago. Their song, Fredrik has … [Read more...]
