Year In Review 2011

Stockholm Pride on Expressen

It's been a funny year. It's been a mixed year. It's been a year of ups and downs. Mostly it's been a pretty good year, though there have been times. Yes, there have been times... I started the year catching a flight back from Lismore to Sydney. I'd been in Lismore for about ten days visiting the family. The night before I'd gone to Tropical Fruits New Year's Eve Party. It was okay, I guess, though not really "my scene". A little too much doof-doof music and party-drugs for my liking. The first thing I said to a friend on arriving back in Sydney, was "I won't be doing Tropical Fruits … [Read more...]

Year in Review 2010

Overlooking Stockholm

As I sit down on New Years Eve to think about what's happened in my life this year, there's so much to reflect upon: overseas trips, new adventures at work, and the death of a close family member. I ended last year feeling 2009 had been a year of treading water: I hadn't really done all that much exciting in either my personal or professional life. I began 2010 with a renewed sense of anticipation: in March I was returning to Sweden in significantly different circumstances to the last time in 2008. and I was to be on a panel at the Radio Days Conference in Copenhagen. After my trip … [Read more...]

2009 – The Year that was – Needs to try harder

All roads lead to Stockholm, even from the Barossa Valley

Last year I had the excitement of my "big overseas trip". I always knew it was going to be a bit of a life changing experience, and it was. At the end of this year, I'm conscious about how much I'm still referring back to it. But I don't want to become one of those people who keeps referring back to things that happened in the past. I feel I've done that too much, and I want to look forward. And that's partly why I've been keeping this blog so assiduously since I arrived back: I want my life to keep moving. I want to keep discovering new things. I want to keep having new … [Read more...]

Life Changing Year – 2008

Abisko National Park in Northern Sweden - on top of the world, literally.

You know how you sometimes look back at a year and think, "thank goodness that's over"? Well, that's most definitely NOT the way I feel about this year. Rather it's been one of the most amazing years of my life. For me, it's been a year of extreme highs and extreme lows. I feel like I've ended the year , though in a pretty good state of mind, and with a high degree of optimism and positvity about the future. For the first half of this year, though, I was really really very unhappy. Although I had travel plans which I'd been anticipating for quite some time, I hadn't felt very happy … [Read more...]

Year in Review 2007

Queen Street Mall

As I sit down to write this "year in review", I'm conscious that I'm more interested in what's ahead in 2008 than what occured in 2007. Not that it was a bad year in my life, it's just that I'm approaching 2008 with a great deal more excitement than I approached 2007. Last year I found the Year In Review post a difficult one to write, so I simply resorted to a "Top 10" list. This year, however I'm happier inside, more confident about what I can and can't control about my life, and with a greater emphasis on the needs of friends and family. Speaking of which, I went home to Lismore a few … [Read more...]

2006 – Year In Review

abcshop

Twelve months ago I was still in the midst of coping with turning forty. At about this time last year I wrote... "Turning forty wasn't so bad after all, although I did have a brief midlife crisis in the weeks leading up to the actual event. I began comparing myself with others, wondering about the lives of my peers, i.e. who else was born on November 9, 1965, and wondering if, due to a significant birthday, my life was suddenly over. I don't exactly know why I felt that apprehension, after all, I'm reasonably successful and reasonably happy, I'm reasonably well-balanced and I'm reasonably … [Read more...]
