Tired and Sore

The rain tumbles down...
The rain tumbles down...

I’m feeling a bit sick tonight.

Well, actually I’ve been feeling a bit tired and crook for about forty-eight hours.

At first I put it down to a bit of exhaustion after Eurovision, and waking early, and maybe not getting enough sleep.

So I’ve felt tired, and a bit sore, and I have a bit of a fever (though nothing outrageous).

And I’ve lost my appetite, and I have no desire for alcohol. And when that happens you know something must be wrong.

And then today, I got an email from work which noted…

Dear Sydney Colleagues, Upon advice from the People and Learning Division, I am sending this email to notify staff based in Ultimo that one of our colleagues has recently been diagnosed with Whooping Cough (Pertussis). Outbreaks of Whooping Cough occur in communities every 3 to 4 years.

According to the email… symptoms

…will begin just like a cold, with a runny nose, tiredness and sometimes a mild fever. Coughing then develops with the typical ‘whoop’ sound. Please be aware that the common cold and / or influenza will commence the same way.

I’m not a hypochondriac by any sense of the word. In fact, when it comes to health, I usually avoid doctors, drugs, etc. So I’m not about to declare myself as the next person to come down with Whooping Cough…

But I am feeling a bit crook tonight, and so decided not to go to Swedish class, but to come straight home.

It was raining this afternoon/evening which didn’t help much to the feelings of unwellness, unfortunately. “We don’t cope well with rain in Sydney”, I observed to some visiting colleagues from Queensland, as we found ourselves stuck in late afternoon/evening traffic on George Street. “We just don’t know what to do when it rains”, I told them…

And so I came home and hit the couch. I think I was asleep by about 6.45 tonight, as I came home and collapsed on the couch. I woke an hour or so again with the intention of catching up on my blog, which is what I’m doing now.

I’m feeling a little bit better after a few hours sleep, which is good.
