“How long before you move?”, I asked the waiter tonight. “About five weeks, or thereabouts”, he told me. Once the home of Greek restaurant, Dimitri’s (with associated plate breaking), the building on Cleveland Street will be looking for a new life, as Porteño is moving to another Surry Hills location.
In contrast to Dimitri’s, which always seemed rather old fashioned, Porteño has been uber hip with all the cool kids for a number of years. For a long while you could almost never get a table, as you had to line up outside and put your name on a list.
If you had to sum up the menu, you’d need only one word: meat. Beautifully cooked. The service there has always been good. The only downside has been the noise. With bricks and tiles, and an odd shaped room, you would often struggle to conversation.
For as long as Sue has lived in Sydney (over two years now), we’ve been attempting to have a meal at Porteño. I’ve been there a few times, and have raved about the place. But every time we’ve attempted the queue has either been too long, or we’ve felt like something else.
I’m pleased we finally made it, as Sue told me more about her recent visit to Italy.
