I’d like to first wish Sarah a Happy Fortieth Birthday. As I cast my eye over the photo gallery of her celebration, I became a little sentimental and so went back through my own birthday party photographs from the past. Many of them, of course, are unfit to publish, but some are okay. And so in recognition of my forthcoming forty-first birthday, here’s a photograph from my twenty-first birthday. At the time I was living in Tarragindi, a reasonably nice suburb in Brisbane. Our house had fabulous city-views and a lovely backyard. As “Brideshead Revisited” was still fresh in my mind, the television show having been broadcast just a couple of years earlier, I thought it would be a good idea to have a “dress in white” birthday party. In the background, you can see my friend Heather with whom I lived at the time. You can also see that we were students, with the wine casks going a long way in explaining many things.
