Wedding Day
“You know you’re getting older when you start going to more funerals than weddings”, the husband of a friend joked tonight. He was right. Back in the 70s and 80s, I was going to family weddings. Then by the 90s, it was friends getting married. Now, in 2011, it’s the children of friends who are getting married.
I have two female friends, both in the 50s, who both have sons (only children) about thirty years old. One of those sons is engaged, while the other got married today. So my take on the “you know you’re getting older” is “when you stop going to friend’s weddings, and start going to the weddings of their children”.
And it was a really lovely wedding. Even though they’re both only 31 years old, the couple have been in a relationship for ten years. And they still seem as in love and committed to each other as when they first met, though obviously moreso since they’ve decided to make an important life commitment.
I find it doubly amazing because I remember the groom when he was about ten years old. For a couple of years, his mother and I shared a house while he went to boarding school. I remember him as a young kid with long blonde hair and a squeaky voice. Now, 20 years later, he’s a lovely man who makes wonderful, articulate speeches at wedding which are honest, articulate and funny, and full of emotion. His mum has done a great job bringing him up. And so I was pleased and proud to attend today’s wedding.
Unlike most of the weddings I’ve been to as an adult, it was a full Catholic Mass Wedding with communion and everything. OMG, I should have gone to confession, though perhaps if I had I would have been in there so long the wedding may not have got underway even now :) The reception was upstairs at the Tea Rooms in the Queen Victoria Building which was a very stylish place, a nice sized space, and somewhere I’d highly recommend. And by the end of the night, the perfect place for a bit of a boogie on the dance floor. Even if I can’t keep up the pace on the dance floor I once did, I’ve still got rhythm and can boogie with the best of them.
Overall, a lovely day, and great to see some people I haven’t seen for a couple of years.
You know your getting old when you say “only 31 years old” ;)
Hahhahahahahahahahaah!!! ROFL. True.
I’ve attended four weddings of the children of friends in recent years and am fearful that I will be attending the weddings of their grandchildren next.
I like the new look of your blog, James. Very professional!
Thanks Victor – felt like a renovation ahead of trip.
