Every day above 7, you’re doing damage

My podiatrist’s words echo in my mind: ‘Every time your blood sugar is above seven, you’re causing damage.’ Seven is the threshold I try to stay below, measured by my daily blood glucose tests. Most days, I’m in the sixes, sometimes fives, occasionally sevens. I’ve learned to recognize the connection between what I eat and my readings. For example, after indulging in French toast the other day, my reading spiked to 7.7

Managing my diabetes has become a central part of my daily life. It’s something I think about constantly, especially given my family history – my cousin had some toes amputated due to diabetes, and my grandmother lost a foot to the same disease. This makes the potential consequences very real for me.

And it was a significant factor in my own lower-limb amputation in 2023.

Diet has been the biggest adjustment I’ve needed to make since amputation and diabetes diagnosis. I’ve drastically reduced my bread intake, particularly at breakfast, swapping it for fruit most days. I’ve also cut out white rice and soft drinks. While I already had a relatively healthy diet, these changes have made a difference.

Initially, I feared managing diabetes would be incredibly difficult, but it hasn’t been as challenging as I anticipated. However, 18 months on, it requires ongoing vigilance.

My recent podiatrist appointment was reassuring. He was pleased with my foot’s condition, checking blood flow and sensitivity. He advised me to moisturize my feet nightly (instead of every few days) and cautioned against going barefoot, which I generally avoid anyway. I’ve worn the same comfortable shoes for the last 12-18 months.

Every morning, I test my blood sugar and take my medication. It’s a routine, but it’s more than that. It’s not just about today’s reading; it’s about protecting my future.

POST SCRIPT : Just days after my last update, my blood sugar spiked to 10.1 on Friday. I’m not sure what caused it. It’s since come down to 8, then 7, which is good, but it’s frustrating how unpredictable it can be. Stress has been a factor in the past, but I don’t think that’s the issue this time. I’m continuing my medication and hoping this spike is temporary. The concern is the potential for long-term damage, and I’ve noticed some cloudiness in my vision and a general mental fog.
