Living Life

It’s been one of those weeks where I’ve been too busy living to life to have time to write about it. Nothing monumental, mind you, nothing life-changing, but distracting enough to keep me busy. If that sounds dismissive, I don’t mean it to be, because I’ve been doing some really terrific things.

Glen & Greig’s AnniversaryOn Saturday night, for example, I went to the twentieth anniversary party for friends Glen and Greig, held at Home Nightclub. It was a really tremendous night, with lots of warm feelings in the room as about fifty or sixty (I estimate) people gathered together to celebrate two very good people who’ve found the kind of happiness and equilibrium in a relationship that seems to be an integral part of the human condition. As you can see from the accompanying photograph, it was a very “Sydney” occasion, as the venue also played host to a few weddings on the night. There’s a lot of photographs already online.

But aside from the warm feelings in the room, Saturday was a write-off otherwise, due to the cold weather, and a number of things I’d planned to do were replaced with an afternoon of DVD-watching.

The DVD I most enjoyed was “Another Country”, a movie made in the late 70s (but set in the 1930s), starring Colin Firth and Rupert Everett, as high school students who, in real life went on to become Russian spies. I don’t know why this period of history interests me so much, the 1930s, but so many of my intellectual and cultural interests are defined by that decade. For example, as unseemly as it might seem, I love reading about the history of fascism. Perhaps it’s because it demonstrates the duality of human nature, and how quickly a society we can go from good to bad.

Also this week, I went to the launch of “Speed Cleaning”, the follow up book to last summer’s cleaning sensation, Spotless (which has sold more than 350,000 copies in Australia alone), and to the fifth anniversary party of Delicious Magazine. Both occasions were great fun, and contributed to a week in which I probably drank too much. I also went to a work “Trivia Night” and caught up with Graeme yesterday for a beer or two.

So, as you can see a lot has happened, though nothing life-shattering. Still, it’s a life that I love and I’m really happy to be living it.
