This Blog Gets Political

I have never really been “political” on this blog. Aside from the occasional motherhood statement about peace being a good thing, and how we should all get on together, I have remained fairly neutral. In part, it’s because I blog with my own name and work for an organisation where it is important to be independant. There is also the fact I generally find “political blogs” incredibly boring. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an original thought on a “political blog”, as they’re mostly obviously partisan with quotes from and links to people the author agrees or disagrees with. But today, I’m gonna be go right out there and say I fully support a move by the Senate in Florida.

The Florida senate wants public school students to pull up their pants. Lawmakers passed a Bill on Thursday that could mean suspensions for students with droopy britches. It won’t become law unless the House of Representatives passes a companion measure. Florida could join several southern US towns and cities that have passed “saggy pants” laws aimed at outlawing what some teenagers consider a fashion statement — wearing pants half way down their buttocks, exposing flesh or underwear.

So yeah, I’ve said it. I’ve gone political. I think this is a good move. I support the Senate in Florida.

I snapped this photograph in January 2003. The bloke was sitting opposite the Sydney Opera House, spoiling an otherwise great view.

  1. While I agree with the sentiment personally – I think passing legislation is going too far.

    What next?

Will they enforce the wearing of hats on sunny days?

Will you be jailed for not wearing a burqa?

Are we really talking about a country who prides itself on its freedoms and liberties?

    Give me a break!

  2. I told you you could be political if you wanted to be!

As a fan of small government I agree with cellobella – legislation is a step too far.

What next? Laws against people taking pictures of builders’ backsides on Circular Quay? ;)

  3. Don’t legislate against it…simply give police the powers to give wedgies to anyone unattractive with sagging trousers. The hot guys who are showing too much butt…well, they can never show too much butt!!! ;-)
