Not That Inspired

It’s been a night of catch-up on my blog.

I don’t have to blog daily, but I choose to.

And it was a promise I made to myself after my trip overseas last year.

While travelling I found writing a daily journal, and having the discipline of publishing it, rather than just hiding it away, was a great thing.

The idea was that it would make me more accountable for my life. It would stop me from wasting days, letting them slip away.

And while I travelled, and since, it has. It’s made me think more about how I live my life. It’s given me some of the discipline I guess deep down I lack.

Of late, I’ve found myself falling back into old habits. Of simply wasting time. Of not taking advantage of all that life’s given me.

And I guess that’s been reflected in my blog.

It’s not about making myself feel guilty. It’s about making sure I have some mechanism in my life that keeps me on track.

I think you need that when you live alone.

When you live with someone, they can keep you in check. They can tell you when you’re being self-indulgent and morose. They can remind you you’re not the only person in the world. They can help you to be a better person.

It’s harder when you live alone to achieve that sense of perspective.

Yes, it’s great to be able to walk around the house naked, to go to the toilet and leave the door open. And if you don’t do the dishes for a couple of days, that’s okay too. Ok, well maybe it’s not okay, but it’s not the end of the world.

Most of the time I really enjoy living alone, and wouldn’t have it any other way.

But there’s the issue of feedback that you often miss out on. Having someone who’ll tell you when you’re being a wanker. Someone who’ll tell you it’s not okay to stay in bed until lunchtime. Etc. etc.

So my blog is more than just an entertainment, an exercise in creative writing. It’s also a reminder for me to pull my finger out, to get out there and enjoy all that life has to offer.

I think I’m inspired again…

  1. haha…your favourite reasons for living alone are exactly the same as mine except for the leaving dishes in the sink for a few days…ew!

I don’t miss having noone to crack the whip, I love the freedom…but I do often worry alot about my extreme lack of discipline!!!

p.s if you can’t be morose and self indulgent on a blog where can you be? and you’re right it’s a great feedback mechanism to make yourself self-examine and cringe…I know you appreciate the no holds barred honesty as much as I do! ;)

  2. There’s just no easy answers to the stuff you’re talking about in this post. But if you accept that there is a possibility that you won’t find someone to settle down with and be with – and that that fact doesn’t invalidate your life at all – there’s the question of motivation. How can you motivate yourself to move forward and not keep slipping back into the old ways?

For Grant, it was a trip overseas with a long lead time – he lost 30 kilos, got healthy and generally got his sh*t together. But, then when he got back, he fell straight back into bad habits – the goal had been achieved, the motivation was gone.

All the pyscho-babblers and self-help gurus say it mostly comes down to having goals – goals with timelines and goals that you’re passionate about. That way you keep yourself in check.

But if I knew the complete answer and had the discipline you’re talking about I wouldn’t be in the situations in life I’m in today. Just off the top of my head I can think of 5 or 6 people in the same place in life as you’re describing in this post.

It seems to be the ‘swine flu’ of our generation :(

  3. Agree with all of the above. But I suspect if we knew the answers life would probably be less interesting. And those who claim to know “the answers” are kidding themselves.

    1. Or trying to make a quick buck selling “the answers” to others.

On the blogging front there seems to be a blog flu going around… my feed reader has been very light recently as the daily bloggers move to a weekly or fortnightly format. My blogging motivation certainly ebbs and flows, but it is a good way to keep doing interesting stuff – too many “not much to report today” posts and you realise you need to do something exciting, if only to blog about it later. ;)
