Yearly Review 2024

Unlike last year when I was out and about at the Tropical Fruits New Years Eve Party, my plan for tonight is to go to bed earlyish, read my book and maybe watch something.

Within that context, here’s my annual review of what’s happening in my life.

Disability Advocacy

This year, I became more involved in disability advocacy. I joined the ABC Inclusive Disability staff support group, which addresses a range of issues, from social events to internal lobbying for accessibility. It’s been a rewarding experience.

Volunteering at the Sydney Disability Expo a few months ago was eye-opening. Meeting people with diverse disabilities broadened my understanding beyond my own lived experience with physical disability. I learned a lot about communication and connecting with people from various backgrounds.

I also joined two advisory groups: one with the Physical Disabilities Council and another with Wounds Australia. I hope to use my communication skills and personal experiences to assist others.

Speaking Engagements

I was invited to speak at the National Disability Insurance Commission’s annual gathering. I shared my experiences of acquiring a disability later in life and offered observations on how my life has changed. It was an enjoyable experience, and I’ve written about it here. https://jamesobrien.id.au/2024/12/acquired-disability/

A few months ago, I attended a national conference on disability in media, which was another insightful experience due to the diverse range of attendees. https://jamesobrien.id.au/2024/11/first-national-conference-on-disability-in-australian-media-day-two/

I’ve attended amputee gatherings in Sydney, which have been great for social connection. Next year, I plan to attend the National Amputees Conference in Adelaide. Looking ahead to 2025, I’m thinking disability advocacy will continue to give meaning to my life and allow me to contribute to others.

Media Appearances

This year, I’ve also made several media appearances. I wrote an article for ABC News about my “subversary,” marking 12 months since my amputation, which was well-received. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-07-30/how-my-life-has-changed-since-i-became-an-amputee/104090002 This led to appearances on various radio programs across the country and even a conference invitation. It was valuable to reflect more deeply on my experiences of the past 18 months.

To celebrate my anniversary I got a local photographer to take a few shots.

Mardi Gras

In March, I participated in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras. I’d marched with the ABC float for years, but I was apprehensive this time due to my recent amputation and difficulty walking long distances. With encouragement from my physio and support from my niece, I decided to give it a go.

We practiced walking the parade route and building my stamina. Although I started strong, I was exhausted by the end. Thankfully, my colleagues and niece supported me throughout. It was a challenging but treasured experience. I’m unsure if I’ll do it again.

This feels like the third act of my life, where I can contribute meaningfully to the disability community, I’ve been thinking lately, as I’ve reflected on all of this work in disability. I’ve always enjoyed communicating and sharing information, and this seems to be an area where I can make a difference.

Positivity and Perspective

People often comment on my positive attitude since all of this happened last year. I usually respond by saying, “I could be dead,” or reminding myself that I’m in a better situation than many others. I feel fortunate.

Family and Home

I visited my family in Lismore several times this year. They were impacted by the 2022 floods and became eligible for a buyback grant. They decided to accept and relocate to East Lismore. Witnessing their journey throughout the year has been a lovely experience. I’m currently home for Christmas, and although it’s hot and humid (typical Lismore weather), I’m enjoying my time with them. I also attended my high school reunion in Lismore earlier in the year. Now that we’re approaching 60, everyone seemed a little more chill than at our last anniversary in 2004.

The Sunday Roast Club

One of my greatest pleasures this year has been establishing the “First Sunday Roast Club.” A group of friends and I get together for a roast lunch on the first Sunday of each month. We take turns choosing venues, enjoying good food, drinks, and company.

Travel Plans for 2025

I’d like to travel more in 2025. I’ve been researching online, considering revisiting favorite places like Paris, Berlin, and Stockholm. I’m also open to new destinations. While I have some travel funds saved, I need to consider my reduced mobility when planning.
